Pairing AMD’s 16-core Ryzen Threadripper CPU with two of Nvidia’s most powerful graphics cards should result in a multipurpose gamer’s dream PC. The Alienware Area-51 Threadripper Edition ($5,919 as tested) is well-equipped for digital work and offers seamless 4K gaming but comes at a high price. Alienware Area-51 Threadripper Edition has the price and position as a high-end gaming pc, encased in an unusual triangular structure. The issue is that it is incredibly expensive as built, and aside from one very specific test, it is not the fastest PC we’ve tested. Competitors such as the Velocity Micro Raptor Z95 and the Origin Neuron were stronger for visual media and videogames, correspondingly, and the Neuron is much less priced.

Alienware’s typical multi-zone lighting effects allow you to configure RGB lighting in nine regions across the majority of the Area-51’s interfaces, and the overall appearance is less flashy and pretentious than the MSI Aegis Ti3. When you open the left-side lid, a series of lights illuminate the inside of the casing, allowing you to see the motherboard and parts while fiddling, and an identical line of lights illuminates the rear on/off switch providing visibility when connecting and unplugging connections.
