Dell Precision 7550 Review
We named Dell’s flagship Precision 7540 king of the hill and Editors’ Choice pick among mobile workstations in February 2020. What does Dell do for a comeback? The Dell Precision 7550 (starting at $1,799; $2,268.33 as tested) packs a lot of power into a chassis that Dell claims is 19% smaller than its predecessor. It boasts an excellent display as well as the expandability and configurability to compete at the top of its class. Unfortunately, the keyboard has regressed subjectively, and the new workstation finished half a step below the older one in our performance benchmarks. The Precision 7550 is a good system, but given its high price, it comes just short of being named Editors’ Choice again.
The Precision 7550 is a gently tapered silver aluminum slab that measures 1.08 by 14.2 by 9.5 inches—noticeably slimmer than competitors like the Lenovo ThinkPad P53 (1.2 by 14.9 by 9.9 inches) or HP ZBook 15 G6 (1 by 14.8 by 10.4 inches), albeit it weighs two or three ounces more at 6 pounds. MIL-STD 810G torture tests against road dangers like as shock, vibration, and environmental extremes were successfully completed by the system. When you hold the screen corners or squeeze the keyboard deck, there is almost no flex.
