Pixel Watch was launched in October of 2022 and quickly became one of the best smartwatches on the market. Since then, there’s only been word on a potential follow-up, with many theorizing that Google is aiming for the Pixel Watch to have a biannual update.
This year’s Google I/O event seems as much of a stacked affair as it gets, and with so much information leaked about products expected to be unveiled, no mention of the Pixel Watch among them seems to quite confirm it.
However, according to a source known to 9to5Google, this may not be the case after all. In fact, if the source is accurate, we could see a new Pixel Watch later this year — likely arriving alongside Google’s new lineup of Pixel 8 series smartphones.

Pixel Watch 2: Electric Boogaloo
Since the original Pixel Watch came out less than a year old at the time of writing, for some it may feel like early days for a follow-up. However, with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Watch also due later this year, updating some of the device’s internals will go some way to keeping it competitive.
Google tends to announce and release its latest flagship devices in October, which lines up nicely with the Pixel Watch 2 announcement as well. According to a 9to5Google source, that’s currently Google’s plan — something that can be backed up by a report in April indicating Google’s goals to incentivize early Pixel Fold users with a free Pixel Watch.
In some cases, this is a marketing technique to sweeten the deal while also eliminating any inventory backlog before unveiling a new product to replace it. However, that doesn’t mean the Pixel Watch hasn’t done well and Google is sitting on top of its smartwatch stock. Indeed, according to Canalys Reports Google managed to ship nearly 880,000 units of the wearable in the fourth quarter of 2022 alone.
prospects
Other than this one source, we don’t have additional confirmation yet to back up claims that the Pixel Watch 2 might be on its way.
However, if we see Google using the original Pixel Watch as leverage to sway customers on the Pixel Fold, that would certainly be a strong indication that a follow-up is coming this fall. Google also can’t let go of a year without a hardware upgrade in the competitive smartwatch market, the Pixel Watch is an excellent first effort, but hopefully we’ll see a second size introduced this year and possibly battery life to rival some of Google’s products.
